Jim Truman is the Director - Global Metallurgical Coal Markets with Wood Mackenzie. He is a geologist by training, having attended West Virginia University and the University of South Carolina. Prior to joining Wood Mackenzie, he worked for a number of major coal companies and has specialized in the evaluation of the Central Appalachian coal industry. He now focuses on trends in global metallurgical coal trade.
Dr. Bristow has been actively involved in the steel and steelmaking raw materials industries for over 22 years. During this time, he has led numerous investigations in coal and iron ore technical and market research, minerals strategy development, and market planning for BHP’s coal business, and was Chief Analyst for BHP Billiton’s Carbon Steel Materials Group, leading the Market Intelligence Group in Singapore.
His key expertise in steel, metallurgical coal, iron ore, and manganese ore and ferroalloys, coupled with strategic vision and long term analysis on future directions in emerging markets, saw him as an early proponent of the rebirth of the global steel industry, the rise of China and of coal’s growth story, together with a strong belief in China’s emergence as a major seaborne metallurgical coal importer. He has been a strong advocate for India’s growing coal demand.
In April 2009, he formed H&W Worldwide Consulting, putting his strong market analysis and strategy skills to good use across bulk commodities, including iron ore and coal –for both coking and thermal.
As an internationally recognized expert in areas of steel and steelmaking raw materials, long term trends and scenarios, he has written and presented numerous publications at highly respected international conferences and meetings.
Jorge Caldeira has been actively involved in the ironmaking and ironmaking raw materials industries for 40 years. He is a graduated Metallurgical Engineering from the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro in 1977 and got a Master´s degree in Coal Science at the Pennsylvania State University in the USA in 1981. Had an extension program with Professor Harry March at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne in the UK in 1985.
As a professional, he worked for CSN- Brazilian National Steel Co. for 16 years (12 years at their R&D Centre leading coal & coke projects and 4 years as General Manager Coke Oven and By-Products operations as well as Head of the Central Laboratories.
Since 1993, he has started his own consulting company – COALBIZ - and has rendered technical and commercial services to various coal suppliers from Australia, USA and Canada and to end user from various countries such as Brazil, India, Vietnam and Thailand. For the last 24 years, he has also been with the Australian Jellinbah Group where he currently serves as their Manager Technical Marketing.

Johan Van Boggenlen graduated from Delft University of Technology (NL) with an MSc in Materials Science. He started work at the Teesside Technology Centre (UK) research laboratories of Tata Steel and its predecessors, first as a researcher, later as Knowledge Group Leader. The main topics of this knowledge group were BOF steelmaking and ladle metallurgy. He started at HIsarna as a shift manager for the first four test campaigns. He became Operations Manager for the 5th test campaign. With the transition of HIsarna from R&D facility to pilot production facility I took on the role of Technology Manger for the HIsarna pilot plant.

Dr. Ahmed Shah Firoz served as Chief Economist at the Economic Research Unit of the Ministry of Steel till recently, studied Economics in India’s prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, to acquire is his Masters (MA) ,M.Phil. and Doctorate (Ph.D.) degrees. He worked on the problems of disequilibrium states of the market specifically involving consumer behavior in shortage economies of the erstwhile USSR, Hungary and Poland. He also worked on the concepts of soft budget constraints in investment decisions in both centrally planned and market economies.
Firoz is currently a member of the Expert Group in the government project Mining 2035 undertaken under the auspices of Niti Aayog, the government’s most important think tank and policy driver. He is a Member of the Governing Body of Thought Arbitrage Research Institute ( TARI), a professional research body. He is also member of the Advisory and Governing Body of Steel User Federation of India ( SUFI). He continues to advise the government on various policy and strategic matters related to the iron and steel and coal and other related sectors. He is also seen as the architect of India’s new steel policy.
Mr. Gao Xingsuo is an expert in Cokemaking industry with 35 years’ experience in the R&D, engineering, project delivery, heating and commissioning of coke plants. Dr. Hans Bodo Lüngen was born in 1955 in Germany.
After the study of metallurgy at Technical University Aachen, Germany, he started his professional work on 1 March 1985 at Steel Institute VDEh, Düsseldorf, Germany, in the metallurgy department. He finished his Dr.-Ing. thesis in the field of iron ore sintering in the year 1990.
He was for many years responsible for the ironmaking department. In April 2008 he was appointed director technology and in November 2019 Executive Member of the Managing Board of Steel Institute VDEh and chairman of the board of administration of the VDEh Betriebsforschungsinstitut GmbH (BFI), a 100 % daughter of VDEh.
Hans Bodo Lüngen had and still has activities in European Committees and in expert groups within the European research work since 1985.
He currently has more than 300 technical publications in the field of iron and steelmaking including environmental and CO2 mitigation aspects.

Joseph J. Poveromo, received his B.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering at Rennselaer Polytechnic in Troy, New York in 1968. After spending one year as a process engineer at the Sinclair Oil Technical Center in Harvey, Ill, he joined the Center for Process Metallurgy, Department of Chemical Engineering at the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNYAB) in 1969 where he studied under the academic advisement of the late Prof. Julian Szekely. He received his M.S. degree based on his thesis on the “Vapor Deposition of Zinc” in 1971. His Ph.D. dissertation on “Blast Furnace Raceway and Stack Fluid Dynamics” was completed in 1974. Dr. Poveromo joined the Bethlehem Steel Research Department at the Homer Research Labs in Bethlehem, PA in 1974.
His value-in-use studies on coking coal and coke properties helped to reduce BF energy consumption by quantifying benefits of improved coke properties on BF operation. He then became heavily involved in Bethlehem’s iron ore operations in the USA and Canada, serving on the Technical Advisory Committees of Iron Ore Company of Canada and Hibbing Taconite in Minnesota.
He also advises a number of global steel companies, iron ore and other natural resource companies, engineering companies, financial institutions, etc, on optimizing raw material and ironmaking operations, project evaluations, market studies, etc.
