  • Marcelo Andrade

    Raw Material and Ironmaking Manager ArcelorMittal

    Marcelo Andrade was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro Brazil.

    He attended to Rio de Janeiro Federal University  where he graduated in Chemical Engineering in 1992 in sequence he did a Master Degree in Industrial Engineering in the same university. 

    Marcelo joint Tubarao Works (steel mill located in Vitoria in Southeast of Brazil) in 1994 . This mill latter become part of Arcelormittal group. He worked in that mill for 13 years working in Coke Plant, Blast furnace and Sinter Plant as process engineer and operational manager.

    In 2007 he was invited to join Arcelormittal Global R&D as Raw Material and Ironmaking Manager in its facility in East Chicago Indiana and since then he is leading R&D initiatives in the areas of Cokemaking, Sintering , Ironmaking, DRI and Recycling.

  • Hayden Atkins

    Specialist Coal Consultant Argus Media

    Hayden Atkins is part of the Argus Media consulting team, focused on global coal markets. Hayden is responsible for the publication of the Seaborne Coal Outlook, as well as market studies on metallurgical coal, thermal coal and petroleum coke markets.

    Prior to joining Argus, Hayden was responsible for global thermal coal, uranium and precious metals market analytics and forecasting as part of Macquarie Bank’s commodities research team based in London.  This involved providing fundamental market research and forecasts for both Macquarie bank divisions and external clients.  Hayden also held the position of Macroeconomist prior to joining the commodities team, focusing on the Australian economy.

    Hayden obtained an Honors degree in Economics at the University of Melbourne along with a Bachelor of Information Systems.

  • Dr. Neil J. Bristow

    Principal/Managing Consultant H&W Worldwide Consulting Pty Ltd, Australia

    Dr. Bristow has been actively involved in the steel and steelmaking raw materials industries for over 22 years. During this time, he has led numerous investigations in coal and iron ore technical and market research, minerals strategy development, and market planning for BHP’s coal business, and was Chief Analyst for BHP Billiton’s Carbon Steel Materials Group, leading the Market Intelligence Group in Singapore.

    His key expertise in steel, metallurgical coal, iron ore, and manganese ore and ferroalloys, coupled with strategic vision and long term analysis on future directions in emerging markets, saw him as an early proponent of the rebirth of the global steel industry, the rise of China and of coal’s growth story, together with a strong belief in China’s emergence as a major seaborne metallurgical coal importer. He has been a strong advocate for India’s growing coal demand.

    In April 2009, he formed H&W Worldwide Consulting, putting his strong market analysis and strategy skills to good use across bulk commodities, including iron ore and coal –for both coking and thermal.

    As an internationally recognized expert in areas of steel and steelmaking raw materials, long term trends and scenarios, he has written and presented numerous publications at highly respected international conferences and meetings.

  • Greg Driscoll

    CEO Blaschak Coal

    Greg Driscoll is a seasoned energy industry executive with a background that includes petroleum refining and marketing, natural gas distribution, energy technology, demand-side power management and anthracite coal mining preparation and distribution. A Chemical Engineer by training, he has served in executive capacities in a number of enterprises, from small start-ups to the Fortune 150.  He specializes in constructively leading organizations to and through major inflection points such as leadership change, new business direction, operations improvement and ownership change.

    Currently, he serves as President and Chief Executive Officer at Blaschak Coal Corp, a top three participant in the Pennsylvania Anthracite industry. He joined Blaschak at the time of a recapitalization of the company when the founding family sold majority ownership to Milestone Partners, a prominent Philadelphia based Private Equity firm. 

    Mr. Driscoll’s previous positions include President and CEO at Enerwise Global Technologies, Managing Director for the Investment Banking Division of Legg Mason Wood Walker, and Chief Executive at Carlos R. Leffler Company, a family-owned petroleum marketing and distribution company. Coincident with his tenure at Leffler Company, Mr. Driscoll served as Chairman of the Board for the Philadelphia Gas Works; the largest municipally owned and operated natural gas utility in the country. 

    Mr. Driscoll also had a successful career at Sunoco, Inc., serving as Senior Vice President where he led Sun’s Lubricants, Chemicals and Retail Marketing divisions. In addition to his tenure as Chairman at PGW, Mr. Driscoll has served as a Trustee of The Franklin Institute, and as Director in a number of commercial and non-profit organizations.

    A native of the Delaware Valley, Mr. Driscoll received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Drexel University and participated in the Executive MBA program of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

  • Joan Etter

    Coke and Coal Engineer ArcelorMittal

    Joan Etter has 20 years of experience supporting Ironmaking Operations in the Steel Industry.  Since 2008, she has been a member of the technical team for ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor Ironmaking Technology.  As a Coal and Coke Engineer, she has responsibility for understanding coal and coke quality relationships to blast furnace performance, investigating operating and technical issues, leading problem solving and corrective actions and evaluation of coals and cokes for cokemaking and ironmaking operations.  Prior to joining the ArcelorMittal team, from 1997 to 2007, she was Quality Manager at the SunCoke Indiana Harbor Non-Recovery Coke Plant.   In that role, in conjunction with the steel mill customer, she used statistical start-up methodology to establish SOPs for communication and coal and coke quality monitoring and prediction.  She also worked previously in the Hazardous Waste Industry auditing company disposal facilities and laboratories and assuring that waste disposal was in compliance with applicable regulations.  Joan holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from Purdue University.

  • Dr. Ahmed S. Firoz

    Chief Economist Economic Research Unit, Ministry of Steel - India

    Dr. Ahmed Shah Firoz, born in 1959 and currently serving as Chief Economist at the Economic Research Unit of the Ministry of Steel, studied Economics  in India’s prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi,  to acquire  is his Masters (MA) ,M.Phil. and Doctorate  (Ph.D.) degrees. He worked on the problems of disequilibrium states of the market specifically involving consumer behavior in shortage economies of the erstwhile USSR, Hungary and Poland. He also worked on the concepts of soft budget constraints in investment decisions in both centrally planned and market economies.

    He then moved on to study industrial development and growth and focused on metal and natural resource industries, including energy related products. He has been working for over 20 years on steel, aluminium, coal ( coking and thermal) , metallurgical coke, petroleum coke, iron ore, etc. in both the Indian and global context.

    He has a large number of publications in academic journals apart from over four hundred and fifty articles in various other journals, web based research publications, newspapers, etc.. He has addressed over one hundred and fifty international and national seminars and conferences in India and across over twenty five other countries.

    Firoz is globally recognized as an expert in steel and energy. While on sabbatical from the current position,  he worked on several important research projects involving coal, iron ore, steel and oil with industry behemoths such as BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, POSCO, the Aditya Birla Group, wtc.. In addition he was deeply involved in major research works with organizations such as Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), National Council for Applied Economic Research ( NCAER), Federation of Indian Mineral Industries ( FIMI), Hatch (UK), etc..

    Firoz advises the government on various policy and strategic matters related to the iron and steel and coal and other related sectors. He is also seen as the architect of India’s  new steel policy. He is a member of various high level committees which are set up to deal with the policy issues of the government.

    He is also a passionate photographer and has held several exhibitions of his fine art photographs in the top galleries in the country. 

  • Mike Grim

    President Oremco, Inc. (subsidiary of Tata Steel)

    Mike’s USA Coal  Industry career has spanned 47 plus years, the first “half” began with the N&W Railway (now NS Corp) ,through international trading , purchasing and sales at Hawley Fuel Corp.,  Coal Trading Corp. and Koch Carbon. The second “half” has been with Oremco, inc. as Manager of Sourcing  and supply chain- USA thermal coals for National Power and Power Gen of the UK and more recently, first as General Manager and then Vice President and/ President, Metallurgical Purchasing and Supply Chain Logistics - USA Coals for Corus/TATA Steel Europe. Mike resides with his wife Dianne in Goldens Bridge, New York.      

  • Mike Hardesty

    Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations, Business Development, Terminals and International Coke SunCoke Energy

    Mike Hardesty is Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations, Business Development, Terminals and International Coke for SunCoke Energy. He joined SunCoke in September 2011 bringing with him more than 28 years of mining industry experience.

    Before joining SunCoke, Mr. Hardesty served as Senior Vice President for International Coal Group, Inc. (ICG) where he was responsible for leading the sales and marketing functions, including the implementation of marketing, trading, and transportation strategies. While at ICG, he was a key member of the executive management team, providing both strategic counsel and analysis to the Chief Executive Officer.

    Prior to ICG, Mr. Hardesty served as Vice President of Commercial Optimization at Arch Coal. His primary leadership responsibilities there included developing and executing trade strategies, optimizing production output, and management responsibilities for direct coal purchasing activities.

    Mr. Hardesty earned his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Kentucky. He is a past board member and Secretary-Treasurer of the Putnam County Development Authority in West Virginia.

  • Stan Houser

    Director of Business Development for Solid Fuels Intertek

    Stan joined Intertek in Oct. 2005 bringing over thirty years of experience in the Commodities inspection and testing industries with an emphasis on Coal, Petroleum Coke, Metallurgical Coke and Renewables.  Prior to joining Intertek, he progressed through several positions with increasing responsibility at an independent testing laboratory involved in the Coal/Coke testing industry.  In addition to his laboratory and inspection experience, he has worked with an International trader of Petroleum Coke in a Quality and Operations position which included transportation and logistics.  Stan also has experience in the Oil, Gas and Chemical testing sector as a Branch Manager with responsibilities requisite to the position.

  • Arun Kumar Jagatramka

    Chairman and Managing Director Gujarat NRE Coke Limited

    Mr Arun Kumar Jagatramka is the Chairman and Managing Director of Gujarat NRE Coke Limited (GNCL). He is a Chartered Accountant with an all India 1st rank and gold medal.  Under his able guidance, the NRE group has emerged as one of the largest independent producers of metallurgical coke in India with production capacity of around 1.5 million tonnes per annum, spread over three plants in the states of Gujarat and Karnataka. GNCL is the pioneer of coke exports from India and has successfully undertaken export consignments to various countries like Argentina, Brazil, France, Japan and Malaysia. The company also has a mini steel mill in Gujarat which produces TMT bars.

    Mr Arun Kumar Jagatramka is a member of the India-Australia CEO’s forum as well as a member of India-Japan Business Leaders Forum from the Indian side nominated by The Honourable Prime Minister of India. Mr. Jagatramka had earlier served as the Honorary NSW ‘Sydney Ambassador’ to India, appointed by the Government of New South Wales, Australia. Mr Jagatramka was nominated for “The Australian of the Year 2010” and was conferred with the title “Person of the Year 2009” by Illawarra Mercury, in Australia.

    He is an active member of prominent industry associations of the country like CII and ASSOCHAM. He is the Chairman of ASSOCHAM’s National Council on Ease of Doing Business in India. He is a sought-after speaker in various national and international platforms on a wide range of subjects like economy and industry, steel, coking coal and met coke as well as on ethics and integrity.

    Luke Kosnik is currently the Sourcing Manager – Coal for ArcelorMittal USA LLC.  He has been in the position for 5 years, buying roughly 10 M NT of coking coal annually.  Prior to this role, Luke was Project Analyst for Byproducts Sales and Marketing Excellence for ArcelorMittal USA LLC.  Luke graduated from Michigan State University, with a B.S. in Applied Engineering Sciences and a cognate in Business/Supply Chain Management in the Fall of 2009.

  • William May

    Steel Raw Materials Analyst CRU Group, UK

    Will joined the CRU Steel Raw Materials team a year ago primarily as the editor of the Metallurgical Coke Market Outlook.  Will also contributes to CRU’s Metallurgical Coal, Iron ore and Manganese services with research, analysis and modelling of supply/demand balance and costs.  Will holds a BSc in Geography from the University of Exeter and Masters in Mining Engineering from the Camborne School of Mines.  On graduation he worked at Xstrata’s Newlands Coal in the Bowen basin and got first-hand experience of post-boom coal mining in Queensland.  Following that, he returned to the UK and worked as a research consultant for AMC Consultants on analysis of hard-rock open-stope mine sequencing.  His interest in the market and financial side of the industry brought him then to CRU and steel raw materials.  

  • Bill Molnar

    Manager of Coal Purchasing SunCoke

    After graduating from Clarion University of Pa in 1979 with a BS in Biology, Bill worked for the first 15 years of his career as a lab technician and lab manager for C&K Coal Company in Clarion PA.  He then expanded his metallurgical coal technical coal background working as a technician and petrographer for USX Engineers and Consultants (UEC Coal & Coke Lab).  While at UEC he received a broad technical view of metallurgical coal by working closely not only with the former USS coal and coke research scientists but also with those from Bethlehem Steel, Inland Steel and other domestic iron makers.  In 1998 he was hired by Massey Metallurgical Coal as Manager of Technical Sales & Services where he worked for the next 13 years, until leaving Massey to accept his current position with SunCoke Energy as Manager of Coal Purchasing.  Bill is currently living in Lisle Illinois with his wife, Maureen.

    Mike Nobis is Director of Met Coal Procurement and Coke Sales for DTE Energy Services based in Ann Arbor, MI.  He has been involved in the coal industry since joining DTE in 2000. 

    Prior to assuming his current position, Mike was Director of Coal Trading for DTE Coal Services where he was responsible for leading DTE’s trading activities in the OTC markets. 

    Before joining DTE, Mike obtained his MBA in Finance from Michigan State University following a brief foray in the auto industry.  He also holds a BA in Economics and a BS in Engineering from MSU.

    Ted O’Brien joined Xcoal in 2017 with a role split between Capital Markets and Marketing, where he evaluates global investment opportunities in mines and infrastructure, and supports Xcoal’s core business of marketing coking coal and thermal coal to customers around the world.  Prior to joining Xcoal, Ted spent 10 years at Doyle Trading Consultants, most recently as CEO, where he led the boutique coal consulting and analytics shop.  Ted sits on the Board of Goehring & Rozencwajg Associates, a boutique investment management firm focused on the natural resource sector.  Ted is a graduate of The Pennsylvania State University and is based in New York City.

    Joseph J. Poveromo received his Ph.D. in 1974 at the Center for Process Metallurgy, State U. of New York/Buffalo after receiving a BS Chem. Eng. from Rensselaer Poly. He then joined Bethlehem Steel’s Homer Research Laboratories. In 1993 he established his consultancy, Raw Materials & Ironmaking Global Consulting, serving steel, iron ore, other resource, technology provider, financial and consultancy companies. Dr. Poveromo is a Distinguished Member of AIST (Assoc. of Iron & Steel Technology); his awards include the T. L. Joseph Award for long-standing contributions to ironmaking technology.  He is also a Special Member of the IIMA (International Iron Metallics Association).

    Dr. John F. Quanci is SunCoke Energy’s Vice President of Engineering and Technology, and Chief Technology Officer.  In his present position, Dr. Quanci is helping build critical competencies and improving/advancing SunCoke’s existing technology as well as leading the development of next generation coking technology for both US and international applications in the pursuit of global growth opportunities.

    Dr. Quanci has over 25 years in US and overseas experience in process research, development, plant optimization and in plant manufacturing experience, and has managed a breadth of organizations internal and external to Petroleum industry such as Mobil Research, Mobil Oil, BP/Mobil, Exxon/Mobil, Sunoco, Rodel and Rohm and Haas Electronic Materials (now Dow Electronic Materials).  Prior to SunCoke, his most recent position was Director, Corporate Technology within Sunoco’s Corporate Engineering & Technology organization in which he leads their initiatives to consolidate and leverage process technology/expertise across all of their business units.  

    Dr. Quanci earned a Ph.D. and Masters in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University and a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Art and Science in New York City.  Dr. Quanci is also a registered Professional Engineer and has over forty US and international patents and patent applications.

    Director - Global Metallurgical Coal Markets Wood Mackenzie, USA

    Jim Truman is the Director - Global Metallurgical Coal Markets with Wood Mackenzie. He is a geologist by training, having attended West Virginia University and the University of South Carolina. Prior to joining Wood Mackenzie, he worked for a number of major coal companies and has specialized in the evaluation of the Central Appalachian coal industry. He now focuses on trends in global metallurgical coal trade.

  • Dr Hardarshan S. Valia

    President Coal Science Inc., USA

    Dr. Hardarshan Valia started his career in steel industry in 1979 at R&D Laboratories of Inland Steel Company (now Arcelor Mittal) in East Chicago, Indiana as a research engineer and after 22 years retired as Staff Scientist. Thereafter, he started his own consulting firm, Coal Science Inc His expertise is in the field of coal selection and blend design for non-recovery and slot oven coke making, prediction of coking coal quality of coal reserve, use of poor quality coals and additives in coke making, coke behavior inside the blast furnace and coal selection for use as Blast Furnace PCI.  Dr. Valia has published more than 85 scientific articles and various book chapters including in Making, Shaping, and Treating of Steel,  and co-authored a book entitled Indiana Coals and the Steel Industry, and is a contributor to American Iron and Steel Institute’s web site. He has been honored with the Joseph Becker Award by the Iron & Steel Society for distinguished contributions in the field of coal carbonization and technology. He also received Joseph Kapitan Award by the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (for best paper)  and was the recipient of the American Iron & Steel Institute Medal for a co-authored paper. He also was invited to participate in the Eminent Visor Program sponsored by CCSD/CSIRO, Australia. Dr. Valia received his M.A. in Geology from Bryn Mawr College and Ph.D. in Geology from Boston University.

    Edwin Yeo is currently Senior Managing Editor, steel raw materials at Platts. He heads the Asia-Pacific coverage of iron ore and coking coal from the Singapore office where he gets to have a front row seat in understanding the growth markets in China and India. Edwin is a frequent speaker at international coal and coke conferences, focusing on trends in the spot market. He has been widely quoted by the media on the metals market such as the Financial Times, Nikkei and the Economic Times of India. Edwin holds a masters’ degree in Applied Economics at the Singapore Management University.
